The Place for Model-A Ford Carburetors

A good cleaning is sometimes all that a carburetor needs to get it running well again.

Cleaning minor dirt, rust particles or sludge out of Carburetor.

  1. A Model A's fuel supply contamination is a common cause of carburetion problems. The fuel supply contamination source problems must be addressed before cleaning out the carburetor, or the carburetor will soon be contaminated again.
  2. To clean minor dirt, rust particles, or sludge out of the carburetor, the carburetor must be removed from the engine. If you're not sure how to do this, view Removing Carburetor From Vehicle. Remove the carburetor main bolt, separating the upper and lower carburetor assemblies. I then soak and spray the two assemblies in my hot tank. If one is not available to you, the next best thing is to spray both carburetor assemblies well with carburetor cleaner. Next the assemblies need to be blown out well with compressed air (greater then 60 PSI is recommended). The two assemblies can then be re-assembled and installed on the engine. If the dirt, rust particles, or sludge conditions are too bad, it may be time to put the carburetor through a restoration process.
